'Healthy' obesity 'not a harmless condition', scientists say

Commenting on the findings of the research, lead author of the study Dr Rishi Caleyachetty said that the study suggests that health professions need to change their approach when it comes to handling obesity cases.

These patients also had a higher risk of heart failure and strokes than people of normal weight.

While BMI results for particular individuals could be misleading, the study showed that on a population level, the idea that large numbers of people can be obese and yet metabolically healthy and at no risk of heart disease was wrong.

The study, which is as yet unpublished but was discussed at the European Congress of Obesity in Portugal this week, analysed medical data from 3.5 million people in the United Kingdom over a 20-year period between 1995 and 2015. But, it's been unclear if they are at increased risk for problems such as heart failure or stroke. They noted that compared to a normal weight person without metabolic abnormalities, an obese individual with three metabolic abnormalities had a 2.6 times increased risk of coronary heart disease, a 58 percent increased risk of cerebrovascular disease, including strokes, a 3.8 times increased risk of heart failure as well as a 2.2 times increased risk of PVD.

People with metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) are clinically obese in terms of their body mass index (BMI) (more than 30 kg/m2), but do not have metabolic complications that usually come with obesity, such as abnormal blood fats, poor blood sugar control or diabetes, and high blood pressure.

The idea of people being fat but fit is nothing more than a myth, health experts have discovered.

But, by studying millions of medical records from 1995 to 2015, a University of Birmingham team found those who were obese but regarded as metabolically healthy still had nearly double (96%) the risk of heart failure.

Ford to cut 1400 jobs in North America, Asia
Last year Ford reported $4.6 billion in net income - which would have been considered an outstanding achievement a decade ago. Jonas said he was impressed with Ford's decisive action to cut jobs, but he still thinks Ford stock is overvalued.

These figures held true even when factors such as whether people smoked were taken into account.

In addition, excluding smokers, those with metabolically healthy obesity had an 11% higher risk of developing peripheral vascular disease.

He continued: "The priority of health professionals should be to promote and facilitate weight loss among obese persons, regardless of the presence or absence of metabolic abnormalities".

'Metabolically healthy obesity is not a harmless condition, and it would be incorrect to think so.

The British Heart Foundation recommends some heart health advice to obese people, such as not smoking, eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and limiting the amount of alcohol.

There is no such thing as being fat and fit, experts warned yesterday. The new study has debunked the widely health medical belief that some fat people can also stay fit.

'The idea of being healthily obese is a myth and there is much that health professionals and people who are obese can do to reduce their risk of disease'.
