The same political pressure that forced Rosenstein's hand also forced him to choose someone in whom most people could have confidence, someone who would not keep quiet if Trump or Sessions tried to interfere with him, and against whom credible grounds for dismissal would be almost impossible to find. "He has his own budget; he can hire his own staff; he can kick all the FBI to the curb for all he wants" and can take the investigation wherever it leads. In addition, Comey wrote a memo detailing Trump's comments to him in February saying "I hope you can let this go", referring to the Flynn probe, a source who saw the memo said on Tuesday.

Repeating his assertion that Comey "was very unpopular with most people", Trump said he was dismissed over inaccurate testimony delivered before Congress as well as his faulty decision making during the presidential campaign. "Mr. Rosenstein has done the right thing", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on the Senate floor.

"The general consensus is it was a good decision to pick a special counsel", said South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham, saying most lawmakers have "a lot of confidence in Mr. Mueller", who ran the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 12 years.

He will resign from his private law firm WilmerHale to avoid any conflicts of interest, the Justice Department said.

"A thorough investigation will confirm what we already know - there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity", said the president. He has served presidents of both political parties and, after taking the director job days before the September 11 attacks, oversaw the FBI's terrorism-fighting efforts over the next decade. By several senators' accounts, he contradicted Trump's statements that Rosenstein's written criticism of FBI Director James Comey had been a factor in Comey's recent firing by the president.

Russian Federation has denied USA intelligence agencies' conclusion that it interfered in the election campaign to try to tilt the vote in Trump's favor.

So far, no evidence of collusion has been presented, but the question has consumed the first four months of Trump's presidency and spurred multiple crises that have left the White House shell-shocked.

Lawmakers were still picking through the fallout of Wednesday's stunning announcement by deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that he appointed Mueller to direct the special investigation into ties between Trump aides and Russian Federation. But journalists were intent on getting his reaction to Mueller's appointment.

Protests in Greece for 2nd day ahead of major austerity vote
Masked youths broke away from an otherwise peaceful crowd and threw petrol bombs at riot police, who responded with tear gas. The IMF has been reluctant to join Greece's current bailout, saying it wants assurances that its debt will be sustainable.

"And I think if you even look at what Acting Director [Andrew] McCabe said last week, he made it very clear that they had the resources that they need and that the work continues".

The tweets fly in the face of the statement issued on Wednesday night which had appeared as an attempt by Trump's staff to tamp down the raging political storm over Russian Federation which has resulted in Trump's worst week in office so far.

Rosenstein also is likely to face questions about whether the Justice Department will cooperate with congressional investigators seeking memos that Comey reportedly wrote after his conversations with the president.

President Trump added that there was never a special counsel appointed for illegal acts that took place during Hillary Clinton's campaign or the Obama Administration. Trump himself had already contradicted that explanation, telling interviewers earlier that he had already chose to dismiss Comey. "You've got the talking heads pontificating about someone I know well, when they don't know him at all and they don't have all the facts".

Trump undercut that timeline in an interview last week, but in a news conference on Thursday, he said he relied on Rosenstein's recommendation to make his decision.

On Capitol Hill, Comey was clearly the man in demand, with three committees working to seat him at their witness tables soon, two in the Senate and one in the House.

Trump is preparing to leave town tomorrow on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the Administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.
