On Wednesday, White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters aboard Air Force One that Lieberman was being considered to replace James Comey, who Trump fired last week.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has been a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and serves on a number of boards. Comey was sacked by President Donald Trump last week.

Trump met with Lieberman Wednesday and found him "agreeable", a source said.

Lieberman is a devout follower of Orthodox Judaism.

In addition to Lieberman, the president was set to meet with other candidates for the Federal Bureau of Investigation post. He also has said he could name a candidate by the end of the week, before he departs Friday afternoon on his first overseas trip as president.

Trump's choice must win Senate confirmation amid the Justice Department's investigation into Russia's election hacking and the Trump campaign's possible involvement.

The Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Jason Chaffetz, has said he will ask Mr Comey to testify next week. A USA official who confirmed the disclosure to The Associated Press said the revelation potentially put the source at risk.

Democrats, however, may not love their former vice-presidential candidate, who ran alongside Al Gore in 2000.

McCabe became acting director following Comey's dismissal on May 9.

Some of the appeal of Lieberman to Trump may be in a personal connection.

But several Democratic senators said during a caucus lunch Thursday that they would not support Lieberman, according to a person familiar with the meeting who declined to be identified because the lunch was private. John McCain, and did not seek re-election in 2012. He also was the USA attorney for the Northern District of Oklahoma and served in a law enforcement position in Washington during the administration of former President Ronald Reagan.

"I hope I don't nix his chances here, but I hope that the president would select Joe", the Arizona Republican told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" about his good friend Lieberman, 75, who served as the independent senator from CT from 1989 through 2013. He was the lead agent on the Oklahoma City federal building bombing case in 1995, when Keating was governor, and he was the FBI's on-scene commander after the September 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon.
