Joe Lieberman one of top picks for FBI job, says Trump

The President interviewed four candidates on Wednesday at the White House.

Trump has said he could name a new director before he leaves the country Friday for the Middle East, on his first overseas trip as president.

The circumstances surrounding the firing have made the appointment closely watched, with senators calling for an unimpeachable, nonpartisan appointment.

Lieberman eventually backed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. Joseph Lieberman is his top pick to replace ousted James Comey at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"I think Joe Lieberman is a pillar of credibility", Graham told reporters in the Capitol.

"It's a mistake to nominate anyone who's ever run for office", Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) to Politico.

Since Trump became president, Lieberman has supported some of his more controversial moves, praising his choice of former Fox News commentator K.T. McFarland as deputy National Security Advisor (she was ousted from the job by incoming NSA head H.R. McMaster), and introducing Republican fund-raiser Betsy DeVos as a "change agent" at her Senate hearing (she was later confirmed in a historically close vote).

But Lieberman lost his senate seat to a primary challenger in 2006, and he ran as an independent to retain his seat.

He then further angered Democrats by endorsing Republican Sen.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has been a senior counsel at the NY law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman LLP and serves on a number of boards.

Since leaving the Senate, Lieberman has worked at a large NY law firm that has represented Trump's business interests in the past.

Opposition Democrats immediately accused Trump of seeking to impede the FBI's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, which extended to activities of White House national security advisor Michael Flynn, who was sacked in February for making misleading statements about his Russian contacts.

Lieberman, who is 75, would be an unusual choice and not just because he has limited experience in law enforcement.

Lieberman served as U.S. Senator from CT from 1989 to 2013.

"Joe Lieberman has no real law enforcement credentials".

The president also replied "he is" when asked whether Lieberman is a top candidate for the position.

The former senator was known to buck his party even before endorsing McCain.

But the idea of having Lieberman replace Comey did not engender much enthusiasm among Senate Democrats.

Lieberman is a devout follower of Orthodox Judaism.
