Kobach supported Trump's unfounded claim that "millions" voted illegally

President Donald Trump created a commission on Thursday to investigate voter fraud and suppression, the White House said, a move that follows Trump's unsubstantiated claims of massive voter fraud in the 2016 USA election.

Mr Trump has alleged, without evidence, that three to five million people voted illegally in his 2016 campaign against Democrat Hillary Clinton.

President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order establishing a bipartisan commission to investigate potential voter fraud and voter suppression in the USA election system.

During the White House press briefing on Thursday, deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the commission would include about a dozen members and would review polices that allow for improper voter registrations. The commission is tasked with examining allegations of voter fraud across the country.

President Donald Trump followed through on a pledge to set up a federal panel to "promote fair and honest Federal elections", as backers praised his efforts to rein in voter fraud, while Democratic Party critics said it was nothing more than an effort at voter suppression.

Mr Kobach has been a faithful supporter of Mr Trump's election fraud claims.

Kobach has been the driving force behind a Kansas law requiring new voters to produce a passport, a birth certificate or naturalization papers as proof of citizenship or be denied the ability to cast ballots.

The commission is expected to look at irregularities that affect federal elections, including fraudulent and duplicate registrations, illegal voting and vote suppression.

Chaffetz unsure if Comey documents exist
Before his time in office, he worked in communications for more than a decade and served as campaign manager for former Utah Gov. Chaffetz said Thursday that he would consider stepping aside after he meets with House leadership to discuss its intentions.

Kobach is one of the biggest promoters of the myth there is a widespread conspiracy of in-person voter fraud.

In November, Trump tweeted, "In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally". I have people say it was more than that.

Elections officials in several states, however, reported no instances of widespread fraud.

According to Politico, President Trump also made allegations of voter fraud during a closed-door meeting with a group of senators slated to discuss the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

ACLU's Voting Rights Project director said: "President Trump is attempting to spread his own fake news about election integrity".

"The Commission shall, consistent with applicable law, study the registration and voting processes used in Federal elections", it says.

Democrats and the American Civil Liberties Union criticized the commission, saying it will likely lead to more barriers for minority and low-income voters.
