Led coalition airstrikes targeted Syrian regime forces

The U.S. bombed a convoy of pro-Assad fighters Thursday as they advanced on U.S. "partner forces", according to the coalition's official Twitter account.

In the tweet, it was stated that the strike was carried out because the pro-Assad forces in the region "posed a threat" to U.S. partner forces.

This is now the second time the Trump administration struck Assad regime forces.

US officials said they had used a communications channel that seeks to avoid in-air mishaps between USA and Russian aircraft to ask Russia, one of Assad's chief backers, to notify the members of the convoy to retreat.

A tank and several other vehicles were destroyed in the airstrike after the convoy ignored repeated warnings.

The U.S. military launched airstrikes against pro-Assad forces in Syria, according to a Fox News report.

The base at al-Tanf has been the scene of multiple attacks over the past year.

Last month, US-led allied forces and Syrian rebels thwarted a significant IS attack on the base.

Syrian forces were reportedly told to leave an de-confliction zone and when they refused, proper response was issued.

With a mission that focuses completely on ISIS, US troops have rarely had to worry about operating in close proximity to Syrian forces and their aligned militias.

Several hundred US advisers are in Syria to help train and organize a loose network of opposition groups, called the Syrian Democratic Forces, to defeat ISIS.

USA defence secretary Jim Mattis denied that the destruction of the convoy, which included a number of tanks, marked an escalation in the American role in Syria. Rather, the strike was a proportionate response done for purposes of force protection-an act of self-defense in an effort to protect US forces.

The U.S., Russia, and Iran are interested parties.

Syrian activists say the strike destroyed vehicles and left casualties.

The biggest exception to this was a USA cruise missile attack on a Syrian airbase last month in response to a suspected chemical attack by the regime.

The US military said the strikes were aimed at stopping the militia advance and protect fighters it has sponsored throughout the civil war and in the fight against the Islamic State terror group.

The airstrike occurred near a low-key training facility used by USA troops northwest of At Tanf, a town about 20 miles from the border, officials said.

In March, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington would set up "interim zones of stability" to allow refugees to return to Syria.

American officials say that more than 20 vehicles drove within 18 miles of the al-Tanf base in southern Syria which houses the American and British Special Forces.

It remains unclear why the Syrians violated the zone.
