"[Nicky] remains in an extremely serious condition in the Intensive Care unit in hospital", a statement from MotoGP said.

Nicky Hayden was the 2006 World Champion with Honda, beating Sprint Valentino Rossi.

He suffered head and chest injuries in the accident and has been placed in an induced coma, according to reports.

United States Honda rider Nicky Hayden celebrates after winning the world Moto GP championship at the Cheste racetrack near Valencia, Spain. He was rushed to the hospital, and a recent update from his team confirms he is in "extremely critical" condition.

Hayden's fiancé Jackie, brother Tommy and mother Rose are by his side. Paramedics stabilized him on site, and then he was taken to the nearest hospital with the highest gravity code.

"The situation is stable", said the brief statement issued by the hospital on Friday morning.

Rossi, a team-mate of Hayden's when they rode for both Repsol Honda and later Ducati, added: "The most handsome thing I have about him is when he gave his hand to me after the unlucky race of Valencia 2015, on the lap of honour". For him it was his farewell to MotoGP, I had just lost the world [title]. Stay close as we will keep you updated on his condition as soon as new details emerge.

Stoner and Hayden, both MotoGP World Champions, were brought together by Ducati to form one of the strongest teams in 2009.
