NHS works to curtail cyber attack damage

Europol executive director Rob Wainwright said the situation could worsen on Monday when workers return to their offices after the weekend and log on. Thousands of computers and other Microsoft-based systems in Europe and Russian Federation had already fallen victim to the ransomware attack, reported ABC News.

U.S. package delivery giant FedEx, European vehicle factories, Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica, Britain's health service and Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail network were among those hit.

He told the BBC the act was "unprecedented in its scale" and warned more people could find themselves affected on Monday morning.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "We can confirm that the radiology services affected by the national cyber-attack at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital have been restored".

The virus that hit the NHS in England and Scotland, known as Wanna Decryptor or "WannaCry", has infected 200,000 machines in over 150 countries since Friday. "It would not be very hard at all to re-release this ransomware attack without a kill switch or without an approved kill switch that only they can activate".

"At the moment we are in the face of an escalating threat, the numbers are going up".

The insidious bug has crippled systems across the globe, prompting Cyber Security Minister Dan Tehan to call for urgent action from local companies.

Britain's biggest health trust, Barts Health NHS Trust, which runs five hospitals in London, said Monday it was continuing to experience some delays and disruption to services. However, that patch was only for versions of Windows still supported by the software vendor - but Microsoft on 13 May also released patches for out-of-support versions of Windows affected by the vulnerability.

The latest virus attack last week exploits a flaw in a version of Microsoft Windows first identified by U.S. intelligence.

The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt was warned about the failure to update cyber security on NHS IT systems past year.
