Not Sleeping Well? People May Avoid You

Swollen eyelids and dark circles around the eyes might also prevent people from hanging out with you, say researchers, who photographed 25 volunteers without makeup after two consecutive nights of about 7.5 hours of sleep and again after two consecutive nights of slightly less than 4.5 hours of sleep, reports the Los Angeles Times. The pictures were given to 122 people to rate how much they would like to socialize with the study participants. A couple of bad nights is enough to make a person look "significantly" more ugly, their sleep experiments suggest.

"If someone looks less healthy, you are more likely to withdraw from them", Tina Sundelin, doctor and lead researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, told The Guardian. When asked the latter question, the participants said they were less willing to hang out with the sleepy looking photographs. "People who look exhausted also look less healthy", she explains.

In short, people can tell when you're exhausted and think you are less attractive when you haven't got enough sleep.

The paper also noted that "although attractiveness may only be weakly related to actual health, faces that look healthy are also considered attractive".

They were also given a sleep tracking device so they could not cheat. Recent findings show that acute sleep deprivation and looking exhausted are related to decreased attractiveness and health, as perceived by others.

The findings show beauty sleep is a real thing.

The study did not address the reason that a lack of sleep makes others want to avoid you, but the authors have a hypothesis. "This study is a good reminder of how important sleep is to us".

She added that not everyone looks worse after a few nights of bad sleeping.

However, Fenn says she's surprised by how quickly these effects surface. So for now, try your best to avoid those lost hours of mind-numbing Instagram scrolling before bed-and get some damn beauty sleep. "A 2013 study indicated that sleep-deprived people look a bit more sad, so smiling more may further counteract the effects of looking exhausted".
