The gunman had fled to the nearby Pine Kirk Care Center, where 23 residents were inside. She had a relationship with the gunman, Thomas Hartless, authorities said. Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric DiSario responded to a call reporting a man with a gun in the street near the facility; officers arriving as backup found DiSario shot outside. Hartless was later found dead inside the nursing home.

(Doral Chenoweth III/The Columbus Dispatch via AP). People hug as emergency personnel arrive to the scene of a shooting outside Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio on Friday, May 12, 2017. Kirkersville police chief Steven DiSario, nurse's aide Cindy Krantz and nurse Marlina Medrano were shot and killed Friday, by Medrano's ex-boyfriend, Thomas Hartless, 43.

Another former girlfriend said in court documents in 2009 that Hartless held her captive when she tried to leave him over abuse, according to the Dispatch. He was released from jail in April after his latest domestic violence case in March. Records show Medrano had reported injuries including a concussion and cuts requiring stitches. She also told police Hartless "doesn't like police". Long had posted a Facebook warning to the community that "a violent man" was loose after Hartless was released only weeks later. It's suspected Hartless took his own life.

He warned the document should remain confidential to avoid "outside interference". Of the eight hurt, four suffered serious injuries, he said.

Disario had six children.

The two hostages, who were not harmed, ran away when the gunman shot Disario, investigators said.

Law enforcement officials, including Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp, center, walk toward a news conference regarding a shooting at a nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio on Friday, May 12, 2017. "We did discover as we were clearing the nursing home that they did barricade themselves in some of the different areas". Disario, responding to a report of a man with a gun, said in his last radio communication that he had the man in sight.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) ordered flags be flown at half-staff in honor of those killed, and joined most state lawmakers in issuing statements extending their condolences.
