Pence releases financial info, Trump plans to

But new revelations in the Trump Russia scandal now suggest that speculation about Pence may be premature.

The Pence team knew what they were getting themselves into when they joined the Trump ticket and team nearly a year ago.

It is the steadying, practical role that Republicans had hoped Pence would play for a president who has no political or legislative experience and is openly disdainful of the details of policy. "Pence is less toxic than Trump", he said.

Below are three big instances in which Pence said something that turned out to be highly misleading at best and clearly false at worst, starting with the newest one.

"Pence was the head of the transition team that tapped Flynn for national security adviser".

Most importantly, Trump's potential successor would be Vice President Mike Pence, whose stated opinions on social issues are sometimes even more conservative than Trump's.

"I never thought I'd be in a world where I'd say this, but I'd much rather have Mike Pence in the Oval Office", said another former senior Obama administration official.

BAIER: You're disappointed by the story?

It is the first time a sitting vice president has formed such a separate political arm. In fact, the Trump transition team headed by Pence was aware that Flynn was under investigation, the Times reported, but cleared him and appointed the foreign agent as United States National Security Adviser anyway.

Pochettino is staying at Spurs
The forward has been in much better form in recent weeks and looks overpriced at [3.3]. We've got the team, we've got the belief, so next season hopefully it's our year".

Erick Erickson, a conservative pundit who once denounced the idea of a Trump presidency but then pledged to give him a chance after he won, wrote that Republicans should now leave Trump's corner because they "have no need for him with Mike Pence in the wings".

The question of what Pence knew and when first arose months earlier after reports surfaced that Flynn discussed sanctions with Russia's ambassador to Washington despite Pence's public claim to the contrary.

So while it's theoretically possible that the nation would breathe a sigh of relief and welcome Pence's ascendance as a much-needed return to reasonable leadership, chances are he'd come in with low popularity, the stench of Trump hanging upon him. That would be gross negligence on McGahn's behalf.

Pence didn't respond. Flynn got the job he wanted anyway. But that would be highly, highly misleading - at best.

During his 13-minute remarks, Pence made no explicit mention of flaring controversies, including those related to Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey, reports of his sharing highly classified material with Russian officials or the appointment of a special counsel to probe Russian meddling in the USA election. Why just kick Comey to the curb for looking into whether Trump cuddled up with the Commies when you can try to scare him with a muzzle him as well. "That's not what this is about".

Two days later, Trump said in an interview with NBC News that he was planning to fire Comey anyway and had considered it since the start of his administration.

"When I made a decision to just do it I said to myself, I said, 'You know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, '" Mr Trump told NBC's Lester Holt.

Pence could argue that Trump technically did accept the recommendations of the Justice Department.
