Senators chase Fleury, rout Penguins 5-1 in Game 3

Going up 4-0 on just 12 shots in the first 13 minutes, sending Marc-Andre Fleury to the bench and downing the Pens in a performance reminiscent of Pittsburgh's Game 6 dud against the Washington Capitals, the Senators claimed a 5-1 rout to swipe a lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Sens were quick to disprove critics of the tiresome, bend-but-do not break trap system they have deployed to slow the Penguins with a goal 48 seconds into the game and three more in a span of 2:18 later in the first period after Mike Hoffman got the party started.

"There's just no bad skaters really anymore", he said.

Yet Sullivan hesitated to throw his support behind either one of them for Game 4, the debacle of Game 3 still red on his face.

"When you get to this point, everybody believes in their own game and what gets you here, but there are little adjustments you have to make", Crosby said.

"Well, listen, we had a fair amount of scoring chances", Sullivan said. "We worked pretty hard for our goals tonight".

Murray looked solid allowing one goal on 20 shots.

Coach Guy Boucher has insisted on an extremely defensive style from the day he took over the Senators last May.

The Ducks won 12 games by a goal when the current record of 51 was set, including three of four against the Sens in the Stanley Cup final. "We're workers here. We don't decide which system is put in place, we just go out there and execute and do our job".

"That's what we're here to do".

'Seattle's son' Chris Cornell mourned in city
Cornell was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden on a United States tour that kicked off last month. Soundgarden's current tour kicked off in late April and had been due to run until 27 May.

Hosting their first Eastern Conference final game in 10 years, the Sens came out flying and scored after only 48 seconds.

Brassard got the first of three when he snatched an attempted Erik Karlsson dump-in and swung wide of the Pittsburgh goal. Bobby Ryan eventually gained possession down low and found Methot with a crafty pass. On the second, by Marc Methot, the puck deflected into the net off defenseman Ian Cole's skate.

The Penguins lost another of top defensemen when Justin Schultz joined Kris Letang on the sidelines with a shoulder injury in game two. Still, it was Murray who supplanted Fleury as the team's starter this season, and it was Murray who played well enough at times this season that many openly wondered if the Pens would trade Fleury before the deadline.

Considering his strong season, last year's playoffs and his apparent return to full strength, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan will have a tough decision to make for Game 4.

So the 39-year-old Mark Streit stepped in as a replacement on Wednesday.

Ottawa, looking crisp and confident, finished the flurry 24 seconds after Brassard's goal, with Smith beating Fleury on a wrap-around, chasing Fleury from the game. "I think, when you give up a goal that early in the game against a team that's playing at home, it gives their team a lot of energy. You give teams odd-man rushes the whole game, they're going to score on a good amount of them". "I think we have to be ready right from the start of the puck and we simply have to be better".

In question now is whether Sullivan turns to Murray, who helped deliver the Pens a Cup last season and was excellent in his first full National Hockey League season, for Game 4 or goes back to Fleury.

The crowd was delirious throughout the one-sided win and all the more so when their team got under the skin of the Penguins.

At one point late in the first, Dion Phaneuf levelled former Maple Leafs teammate Phil Kessel.

Towel-waving fans chanted Kessel's name and later cheered as Mark Stone mixed it up with Evgeni Malkin.
