Setting up of 10 nuclear reactors gets Union cabinet's nod

Narendra Modi cabinet approves 10 nuclear reactors for power generation

"It will help produce clean energy", Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal said.

The country is setting up new goals to increase its renewable power generation including a plan to add 100,000 MW of solar power by 2022.

The existing PWHR reactors in India have the capacity to generate between 220 MW and 700 MW.

In the biggest expansion of the country's nuclear power industry, the Indian government has announced plans to construct ten heavy water reactors.

The decision was taken at the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The department also said that the order would cost Rs 70,000 crore, and that it would create 33,400 jobs. Building capacity for another 6,700 MW is in the pipeline.

With Russia and France failing to make any headway in convincing China to drop its reservations against India's entry into the elite Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the Union Cabinet, in a policy decision on Wednesday, approved construction of indigenous pressurised heavy water (PHWR) reactors.

The High Revenue estimate is predicted as 7.69 Billion, while the Low Revenue Estimate prediction stands at 7.42 Billion. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSM ) has the market capitalization of $176.35 Billion.

"A total of 7000 MW capacity will be added".

A 2008 civilian nuclear deal with the United States followed by a waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers Group saw India gaining access to the nuclear energy market and getting into initial agreements with countries, which ranged from the setting up of nuclear reactors to uranium imports. But there must be a prominent place for nuclear energy in India's mix of power sources, given that modern technology has proved its efficacy in sustaining a capacity factor of 80 per cent at the highest operational safety.

The Russian nuclear corporation Rosatom is constructing India's Kudankulam nuclear power plant (NPP) as part of a deal signed between Moscow and New Delhi in 1998.

The approval also marks a statement of strong belief in the capability of India's scientific community to build our technological capacities.

The reactors will be fully home-grown and will be one of the flagship initiatives of the government under "Make in India". "India's record of building and operating PHWR reactors over the last almost 40 years is globally acclaimed", he added.
