Julian Assange probe dropped by Swedish prosecutors

The Swedish prosecutor is dropping its investigation into an allegation of rape against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

In documents filed Friday to the Stockholm District Court, Ny wrote that "in view of the fact that all prospects of pursuing the investigation are now exhausted, it appears that, in light of the views expressed by the Supreme Court in its assessment of the proportionality in this case, it could be argued that it becomes less proportionate to maintain the arrest of Julian Assange in his absence via a European Arrest Warrant".

The Metropolitan Police Service in London said after the news was announced that it remained obliged to arrest Assange should he leave the Ecuadoran embassy on a lesser charge of failing to surrender to a court, the BBC reported.

He feared Sweden would hand him over to the United States to face prosecution over WikiLeaks' publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents in one of the largest information leaks in USA history.

According to reports, in a brief statement by the prosecutor, in this case, said: "Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, has today chose to discontinue the investigation regarding suspected rape by Julian Assange".

Britain and the United States have an extradition treaty, so if Assange leaves the Ecuadorian Embassy where he's claimed asylum, the British could arrest him and send him to the US.

After the news was announced, WikiLeaks tweeted that the "focus now moves to the UK", saying the country had "refused to confirm or deny whether it has already received a US extradition warrant for Julian Assange".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has suggested that the arrest of Assange could be an American priority, saying last month the USA was "stepping up our efforts on all leaks".

British police said that since Assange is now wanted for a "much less serious offense" than the original sex crimes claims, police "will provide a level of resourcing which is proportionate to that offense".

It is not known if US officials are seeking Assange's arrest because of a possible sealed indictment. The letter demanded that Sweden guarantee that Assange won't be extradited to a third country.

Mr. Assange has said that he met his accuser in August 2010 during a trip to Sweden.

Mr Assange has not set foot outside the building, ultimately fearing he could be extradited to the U.S. over Wikileaks' publishing of huge amounts of classified information. "Focus now moves to the UK", WikiLeaks tweeted.

WikiLeaks has generated global controversy by publishing confidential and damaging information from the United States and other countries.

Ecuador's government asked the United Kingdom to give Mr Assange safe passage in order to allow him asylum in the South American nation.

The letter argued that recent public declarations constituted an "obvious risk" for Mr Assange, who originally faced three sexual assault charges that he denied.

Assange and WikiLeaks have repeatedly infuriated US officials with the widespread release of sensitive secret documents related to military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and diplomatic relations around the world.

He said American officials made up the case in an attempt to have him extradited.

During the presidential campaign in the United States, WikiLeaks came under criticism for distributing hacked emails from the Democratic National Committee.

Army Pvt. Chelsea Manning served seven years in prison for giving classified material to WikiLeaks. There were initially two separate allegations being investigated, but one was dropped in 2015 because the statute of limitations ran out.

Assange has said the sex was consensual.

British police kept up a round-the-clock guard outside the embassy until December 2015, when the operation was scaled back partly because of the costs, which had exceeded 11 million pounds (over $17.5 million at the time). She was freed Wednesday, having had her sentence commuted by former President Barack Obama before he left office.
