O'Neill identified the suspect as 26-year-old Richard Rojas, describing him as a USA citizen and former service member with multiple previous DWI arrests.

The auto came to a stop only after slamming into metal stanchions and hurtling into the air, coming to rest on top of the stanchions, flames emerging from its badly damaged front end.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the number is 22. "Out of an abundance of caution major sites in this city will get additional police coverage from our anti-terror units".

New York City's Times Square has roughly 360,000 average daily visitors.

Police identify the driver of the vehicle as Richard Rojas, a Navy veteran from the Bronx. The commissioner said there is no indication that the incident was related to terrorism. Police officers and civilians apprehended the driver, and 22 people have been taken to the hospital for treatments; four are in critical condition. Three other people suffered injuries considered serious, and 15 others "less serious" injuries, he said.

Alyssa Elsman died Thursday when a man drove his auto down the sidewalk for three blocks into the heart of New York City's theater district.

The White House says that President Donald Trump has been "made aware" that a auto plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in Times Square and that he will continue to receive updates as the situation unfolds. NYPD cordoned off several blocks surrounding the crash, while passersby haphazardly attempted to take photos of the scene. "Minutes later, the fire department tweeted: "#FDNY is on scene at 45 St/ Broadway motor vehicle accident.

Bicycle courier Julio Sanchez Rivera, 20, told USA TODAY he was making his first delivery of the day when he heard a auto engine revving.

United Kingdom wage growth falls behind inflation
Between January and March, the number of 16 to 64 year old women in jobs was 70.2%, also the highest rate since records began. Inflation now stands at 2.7 per cent - up from 2.3 per cent in March - and above the Bank of England's two per cent target.

Rojas's maroon sedan vehicle, travelling at high speed, crashed into the group of people and ended up flipping onto its side on the sidewalk, before ambulances and police descended on the area, the AFP photographer said. "He didn't stop. He just kept going". "The only thing I see is this poor woman, mid-air, getting hit by a vehicle and the auto still going".

Rojas, a Navy veteran, also made incriminating statements, saying, "I wanted to kill them", referring to the pedestrians, the sources said. "This poor woman was bleeding from her head, lying down".

"This is more than just a auto accident", he thought as he walked among bleeding victims.

The stainless steel bollards finally stopped the auto and the madness.

Smoke was coming out of the car's hood and the vehicle was slightly overturned on a barrier at a sidewalk in Times Square.

Thursday was the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures reaching a record of 91 degrees.

The crash occurred during lunchtime here with hundreds of thousands of people on the street.

Patrick Graves, a tourist visiting NY, said the driver of the vehicle was "easily speeding".
