A day later, the Times reported that Trump's transition team knew Flynn was under federal investigation before appointing him National Security Adviser. Mueller on Wednesday evening was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein as special counsel to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the US presidential election and related issues.

Trump spoke alongside Colombian President Juan Santos - though the progress made during a work session at the White House between representatives of the two countries took a back seat to the wave of political controversies blanketing the Trump administration. Flynn had been kept on the job for 18 days after the acting attorney general, Sally Yates, had warned the White House that he could be subject to blackmail from the Russians because he had misled Pence.

What Trump meant isn't totally clear, but within a month, Trump - who, by his own admission, was frustrated by the ongoing Russian Federation probes in Congress and the FBI - fired FBI Director James Comey.

"I think it is totally ridiculous", Trump said. Trump has been dismissive of investigations of his campaign's links to Russian Federation, saying that claims of Moscow's meddling in the election to help him win are an excuse by Democrats to explain his upset win over former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. It was later revealed that Comey had allegedly written memos documenting Trump's efforts to pressure him into dropping the investigation into Flynn. Mueller will fill a role independent of the normal channels of authority at the country's Department of Justice.

President Donald Trump told former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn to "stay strong" just weeks before the president fired FBI Director James Comey.

White House knew sacked adviser was under investigation
Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation. The House eventually passed it by a whisker, but the controversial act faces a tough battle in the Senate.

Later, Flynn emerged as a sharp critic of Obama's handling of national security matters, while supporting Trump's long-shot run for the presidency.

The Times report wasn't the one piece published this week that makes Flynn and the Trump administration look bad.

The men were memorably cast - mostly via Comey's 2007 testimony - as honorable men standing against government overreach when they talked former President George W. Bush out of pushing ahead the renewal of a controversial surveillance program.

But Flynn apparently gave indications that he is not going to turn on Trump.

The behind-the-scenes drama leading to Flynn's exit remains in dispute.
