President Donald Trump emphatically denied asking former FBI Director James Comey to end the agency's investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn on Thursday afternoon.

Trump lashed out in the morning on Twitter at the news that the Justice Department appointed a special prosecutor, former FBI director Robert Mueller, to oversee the investigation, calling the move a politically motivated "witch hunt" by his Democratic rivals.

The FBI is also investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, which many believe to be the reason Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week.

He said that he thinks the appointment of a special counsel "divides the country".

The FBI is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including looking into any possible links between Trump campaign associates and the Kremlin.

Reuters reports that after the election, Flynn, who was forced to resign for misleading officials about the nature of his conversations with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak, was trying to establish a "back channel for communication between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin that could bypass the USA national security bureaucracy, which both sides considered hostile to improved relations".

Trump said his administration was committed to cutting the flow of drugs into the United States. He also speculaed that Comey may have stayed on, instead of resigning as Trump's Federal Bureau of Investigation director, in order to dig that hole a little deeper.

In his first press conference since he fired Comey, Trump defended his decision to do so, saying he thought it would actually draw bipartisan praise. "And the acting director just said the other day that no one has tried to impede that investigation", he told reporters at a news conference.

"No, No. Next question", Trump told reporters.

Fighting back has consumed much of the political oxygen inside the White House, leaving Trump's agenda in doubt.

During a speech at the Coast Guard Academy commencement Wednesday, an aggrieved Trump aired his mounting frustrations, declaring that "no politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly".

Matthew Miller, who served as the DOJ's Director of the Office of Public Affairs under former Attorney General Eric Holder, suggested that Comey may have been building an obstruction of justice case against the president, in an interview with the Washington Post.

Trump said the issue is dividing the country and he wanted to get to work running the country. "I hope you can let this go".

"I don't know more about the firing of Comey and the Russian Federation investigation", Sen.
