Trump, dogged by questions at home, makes first trip abroad

The 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers including the United States was a major step toward ending Tehran's worldwide isolation but raised serious concerns in Arab capitals.Iran, the Middle East's second largest power by economy and population, is the Shiite Muslim rival of regional Sunni giant Saudi Arabia. The president also meets with Italy's President Sergio Mattarella. "Will he be a solid representative for the USA who is quite staid and sensible like most presidents are when they go overseas, or will he carry forward the populism and bombast and buffoonery?" said British political strategist Matthew Elliott, who served as chief executive of the pro-Brexit "Vote Leave" campaign.

Mr Trump began thinking about the trip just after his election, and he is deeply involved in the preparations, including by writing much of the speeches he is to deliver in Saudi Arabia and Israel addressing extremism and peace efforts, the first administration official said. Yet each of those meetings will be shadowed by Mr Trump's firing last week of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

On Sunday, the United States president will join Saudi King Salman and other Muslim leaders for the Arab Islamic American Summit that aims to combat extremism and promote moderation.

"President Trump understands that America First does not mean America alone, to the contrary", McMaster said.

From Saudi Arabia, Trump will move on to Israel, where he will have meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and meet Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas in the West Bank.

Alani said the new U.S. administration recognises that Saudi Arabia is a "super-regional state" whose help is required to contain Iran and combat "terrorism". "The Gulf and Muslim leaders will not come to Riyadh because they love him", writer Ziad al-Drees wrote in the pan-Arabic newspaper al-Hayat. "Riyadh agrees with US' administrative view in regard to the role placed by the U.S. in uprooting terrorism", Al-Jubeir said. United States allies in Israel and Saudi Arabia often expressed deep dissatisfaction with the Obama administration's foreign policy, and outreach to Iran, capped by the controversial nuclear deal. Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed said earlier this month that Obama "wasted many significant opportunities" in Syria.

Saudi leaders regularly accuse Iran of stirring regional conflicts by supporting Shiite movements in Syria, Iraq and Bahrain as well as in Yemen.

Bad enough that he was there; bad enough that there would be a handshake; he emphatically did not want any show of warmth. His goal was not a "Saturday Night Live"-style caricature of Trump, so he didn't try to replicate Trump's famous mane".

Trump is visiting Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Vatican, and it isn't a coincidence.

Saudi Arabia wants to seize on Trump's visit to show itself as an earnest partner in the war on terror.

"He is also scheduled to participate in the inauguration of a new center to fight radicalism, and take part in a Twitter forum with young people". They hope he will increase support for the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen against rebels aligned with Iran.

While Saudi Arabia's restrictions on freedom and ban on women driving often grab headlines, Trump is not expected to make human rights concerns a centerpiece of his talks with Saudi royals on Saturday. And they see a role for US investment in efforts to shift the Saudi economy from its dependence on oil.

Trump's focus at the summit will also likely be on securing more multi-billion dollar military deals, advancing economic ties and isolating Iran.

Trump's final itinerary hardly eases him into the delicate world of global diplomacy on foreign soil.

The speech is a high-risk, high-reward opportunity, but is hard to get right, said Jonathan Finer, who served as director of policy planning for former secretary of state John Kerry. Its lyrics go "Justice will be served and the battle will rage / This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage / And you'll be sorry that you messed with / The U.S. of A. / 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass / It's the American way". Partnership agreements in energy and technology will likely be signed.
