But the Turkish Embassy said the demonstrators were aggressively provoking Turkish-Americans who had gathered to greet the president, and they in turn responded in self-defence.

This is not the first time that Erdogan's entourage has been embroiled in a physical fight with protesters on USA soil.

Turkey's foreign minister on Thursday called on the Trump administration to replace its envoy to the anti-Islamic State coalition - the latest sign of Turkish frustration with the USA war strategy in Syria amid mounting tensions between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.

Other U.S. officials also criticized the Erdogan supporters as the aggressors against peaceful protesters, saying their actions outside the Turkish ambassador's residence violated American protections on free speech.

Washington DC Police have labelled an incident involving Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail unleashing on peaceful protesters as "a brutal attack".

The Turkish president had just returned to the embassy after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House when violence broke out as Turkish security pushed past police to confront protesters. Instead, Erdogan's guards were released under a globally recognized custom under which nations don't arrest or detain visiting heads of state and members of their delegations, said the official, who wasn't authorized to comment publicly on the matter and requested anonymity.

Video of the thuggery by black-suited security forces, kicking demonstrators already on the ground, went viral this week.

"You can not have that happen in the United States of America".

The altercation came the same day that Erdogan met with President Donald Trump at the White House.

Zarattini added, "We will not accept that the issue of succession of this government is solved with indirect elections". Representatives for the congressman said he would clarify the matter when he returned on Thursday from a trip to NY .

Two men were also arrested by D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department on the scene - Jalal Kheirabaoi of Fairfax, VA, and Ayten Necmi of Woodside, NY, according to police reports. "We call upon the Turkish government to apologize immediately for the involvement of any officials", the statement continued.

Erdogan, speaking to a group of business leaders in Istanbul, said he told the United States that Turkey would "exercise its rights under the rules of engagement", without consulting anyone, if it faced a threat.

Now while Chief Newsham vows to pursue the culprits involved, it is likely that some of them were en route back to Turkey that evening.

The State Department says it has expressed its concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms.

Senator John McCain on Thursday called for the envoy to be expelled.

The Turkish Embassy, in a statement Wednesday, described the protest as "unpermitted" and "provocative". "Because we have no time to lose", he said.

Lawmakers have decried what they saw as Erdogan's attitude toward dissent making its way from the Mediterranean to America.

He said he told the United States that Turkey could not be part of the operation to retake the Syrian city of Raqqa from Islamic State due to the participation of the YPG.
