In a statement, the army said the us -led anti-terror coalition attacked one of the military positions near the Tanf area in the Syrian desert near the Iraqi borders on Thursday afternoon, leaving a number of "martyrs and some material losses".

The Thursday strike comes in the context of growing tension over which forces will take on the Islamic State group in Syria's east.

Muzahem al Saloum, from the Maghawir al Thwra group, told revealed that that the coalition fighter jets struck after some rebel forces clashed with Syrian and Iranian militias after they had advanced to about 17 miles (27 km) from the base.

"Any military action leading to an escalation of the situation in Syria has an impact on the political process", agencies quoted him as saying.

"A convoy going down the road didn't respond to numerous ways for it to be warned off from getting too close to coalition forces in At-Tanf", a U.S. defence official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Officials from the USA -led coalition attempted to use a hotline established with the Russians to warn the Syrian government to remove the forces from near the coalition base.

The air strike late on Thursday also caused material damage, the source said, adding that this hampered efforts by the Syrian army and its allies to fight Islamic State.

US air strike hit 'military point'

"The Syrian Arab Army will... not be intimidated by the attempts of the so-called coalition to stop it from performing its sacred duties".

CNN reports that the strike occurred near a base American forces use to train allied Syrian opposition fighters.

The reported bombing came just days after the Treasury Department announced a new round of sanctions against Syrian companies and individuals on May 16, citing the Assad regime's "relentless attacks on civilians".

Leaders of anti-Syrian militias said earlier this week that hundreds of Syrian troops and pro-Syrian militias were entering the sparsely populated desert region near Jordan.

Russian Federation and Iran have deployed forces to Syria to back up leader Bashar al-Assad while the US and many of its regional and Western allies have called for the strongman to leave power.

The U.S. -led coalition is also supporting the force with airstrikes.

The Pentagon has stressed the attack did not signal broader United States involvement in Syria's civil war, but Damascus on Friday condemned the strike on pro-government forces as a "brazen attack" and said it would "not be intimidated".
