Volkswagen UP! GTI is the Original Golf GTI Reincarnated

Volkswagen Up GTi

Volkswagen Up GTi

The Volkswagen Up! GTi has been revealed as VW's new hot little city vehicle, complete with a lively 113bhp three-cylinder turbo petrol engine.

Given the obvious temptations on the spec sheet it will prove physically impossible for any motoring media outlet to reference the new Up GTI without comparing it to the original 1976 Golf GTI.

For VW is giving the GTI treatment to the diminutive up! city vehicle to create something which, the company says, will have agility akin to a go-kart.

Do you yearn for the simple, old school driving thrills of a Mk1 Volkswagen Golf GTI, but also want a auto that's built in the 21st century and comes with, y'know, a warranty? Anxious that's not enough? The top Golf GTI however is the limited edition Clubsport S, but that one is based on the pre-facelift model. Modest figures, yes. But ones that make it a vehicle with accessible performance in the real world.

Volkswagen still promises sprightly performance with the 148bhp unit taking the Golf hatch, whether equipped with the six-speed manual or the seven-speed DSG gearbox, from rest to 62 miles per hour in only 8.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 134 miles per hour. You'll actually be able to wring this thing's neck.

Ex-Fox News chief Ailes, 77, dies after fall
Fox News host Sean Hannity tweeted tributes to his onetime boss in a series of messages. "Ailes made news interesting to watch". But there was no greater validation of Fox's influence, under Ailes' tutelage, than the victory of Donald Trump that November.

We've known about this auto for a while now, but it's, err, still not here.

We're yet to drive the vehicle, so can't comment on that just yet. It reminds us a bit of the #PinkBeetle sold here in the U.S.

Watch the hotted-up hatch race the original GTI in the video below.

Unless VW's had a serious off day, this promises to be a thoroughly good vehicle. The news comes after it revealed a new concept was due to be unveiled in Austria next week. Whether it's a true great will all hinge on its price; if VW can make it £15,000 or below, then this could be a proper bargain hero in the Suzuki Swift Sport and (previous gen) Renault Sport Twingo mould. Reckon it's a victor?
