Why Was James Comey Fired? President Trump Contradicts His Team

But Trump told Holt, "Oh, I was going fire regardless".

Led primarily by Democrats, senators are now asking Rosenstein to come back to Capitol Hill next week to explain his role in Comey's dismissal. Comey earlier declined an invitation this week to testify in a closed hearing. Trump's firing of Comey already has left him with the dubious distinction of being the first president since Nixon to fire a law enforcement official overseeing an investigation tied to the White House. He dismissed as less desirable at least two of the 14 candidates under consideration by Mr Trump, former House representative Mike Rogers of MI and senator John Cornyn of Texas, explaining that "these are not normal circumstances".

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that the choice should be "certainly somebody not of a partisan background, certainly somebody of great experience and certainly somebody of courage". "I don't think it's inappropriate to ask". "Warner and myself to make", Burr said. On Thursday, Trump told NBC he knew he ran the risk that by firing Comey he would "confuse people" and "lengthen out the investigation" into ties to Russian Federation.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would "never even suggest the expectation of personal loyalty".

At the moment, Congressional Republicans - at least the bulk of them - seem content to go along with Trump.

The White House initially said Trump was compelled to fire Comey by a critical memo from the deputy attorney general on the director's handling of last year's investigation into Hillary Clinton's email. Multiple officials, including Pence, said the president was acting at the behest of Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

"There is no collusion", Trump said.

During a press briefing, ABC's Jonathan Karl asked, "Isn't it true that the president had already chose to fire James Comey, and he asked the Justice Department to put together the rationale for that firing?"

Seeking to bolster Trump's case that he has had no concealed dealings with Russia, his lawyers said in a letter released by the White House on Friday that a review of Trump's tax returns from the past 10 years showed no income from Russian sources outside of a few exceptions, and indicated he did not owe money to Russian lenders. The U.S. intelligence community determined that the WikiLeaks emails were provided by Russian hackers working for the Kremlin and that the emails were meant to help Trump win the election. Schumer asked for answers to the questions by Monday. That's according to two people familiar with the search process who weren't authorized to publicly discuss the deliberations and spoke on condition of anonymity. "It is essential that the next FBI Director understand the details of how agents do their important work". On Thursday, they asked the deputy attorney general to specify the circumstances surrounding Comey's request. For example, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director took it upon himself to announce that Clinton would not be indicted in the email inquiry after Attorney General Loretta Lynch had a foolhardy, impromptu meeting with Bill Clinton, calling into question the Justice Department's impartiality.

Unclear is whether senators will get the opportunity to hear from another key player who could set part of the record straight: Comey.

CNN said Comey is "not anxious about any tapes" Trump may have, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter.

After Trump made a decision to fire Comey, he was told by aides that Democrats would likely react positively to the news given the role many believe Comey played in Hillary Clinton's defeat past year.
