Some passengers suffered from broken bones and scalp lacerations after being hit with falling luggage or thrown from their seats during the incident, reported Chinese news agency Xinhua.

Flight MU744, departing from Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, was about to land at the Kunming Changshui International Airport when it was hit by turbulence, the airlines said.

An injured passenger said: "We felt strong turbulence twice and minor turbulence three times". Turbulence shook the aircraft seriously enough to injure almost two dozen people, some of whom required immediate treatment at local hospitals after landing.

China Eastern Airlines said on its official microblog account that it has arranged medical services but gave no other details.

The plane landed around 9am local time (2am Irish time), an hour later than scheduled, according to Xinhua. An injured passenger surnamed Shang was quoted as saying: "We applauded when the plane landed safely".

The injured are being treated in two hospitals in Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province after the plane landed safely at 8:50 am today, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

"Many people were injured, and among them, many had not buckled up".

This latest incident involving China Eastern happened a week after another plane in the fleet - which was bound for Shanghai - diverted because of a huge hole in a part of its left engine.
