Brexit talks start Monday. The UK still lacks a plan

"I can confirm as we enter negotiations next week we will do so in a spirit of honest cooperation, taking a pragmatic approach, trying to find a solution that works for the United Kingdom and the European Union 27", he said, referring to the bloc's remaining 27 members.

The announcement followed speculation that talks may have to be delayed because of the inconclusive outcome of last week's General Election, which has already forced the State Opening of Parliament to be put back from June 19 to 21.

The landmark negotiations will begin on Monday when Brexit secretary David Davis meets European Union representative Michel Barnier in Brussels, nearly exactly a year after the United Kingdom first voted to leave the EU.

But the government will double the length of the session to let MPs debate Britain's approach to Brexit without interruption.

On Monday, the European Commission insisted it was "fully prepared and ready for the negotiations to start" the process.

Britain's Department for Exiting the European Union denied that the country has given up on its aim of discussing all aspects of its departure and future relations simultaneously.

Following the meeting, May said: "Speaking with the parties today, it was clear that real progress was made in the last round of discussions and agreement can be reached if there is good will on all sides".

"The thing we all want to avoid is something that's not organised", she said.

Mrs May's weakened position in the House of Commons as a result of losing her majority has fuelled speculation the Tories would be forced to soften their stance on Brexit.

The newspaper said Britain wanted these rights to be available only to those EU nationals who were living in the country before March 29 this year, when the government triggered the start of the two-year process of leaving the EU.But it is likely to accede to EU demands that the date should be when Britain leaves the EU in 2019, the FT said. Two former Conservative prime ministers have also urged May to soften her approach.

Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael said: "The Conservatives can not go from weak and wobbly to business as usual in three days".

Davis told BBC radio on Monday that the government stood by its threat to "walk away" with no deal if talks - when they do eventually start - break down.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron called for a cross-party committee to be set up to handle the Brexit negotiations.
