Manzanita Fire Grows To 5000 Acres In South California, Evacuation Warnings Issued

That's 91 percent of what's already proven to be a busy fire year a full two months before the usual peak of the season. Although about 175 people who live near Panguitch Lake were allowed to briefly return to their homes Sunday.

Republican Utah State Rep. Mike Noel on Monday blamed environmental groups for the fire.

The fire is the largest in the nation at 78 square miles (201 square kilometres).

State fire officials say the blaze has grown to 125 acres and there's zero containment.

Authorities say the Utah fire was started on June 17 by someone using a torch tool to burn weeds on private land.

Several communities have been evacuated: Upper Bear Valley, Panguitch Lake, Horse Valley, Beaver Dam, Castle Valley, Blue Springs, Rainbow Meadows, Mammoth Creek, Dry Lakes, Second Left Hand Canyon, and the town of Brian Head.

A fierce wildfire that has destroyed more than a dozen homes and forced the evacuation of 1,500 residents raged largely unchecked in southwestern Utah for an 11th day, as an army of firefighters struggled to corral the flames.

Riverside County sheriff's office said it had "accidentally" put out evacuation alerts to residents in cities where there is no fire, including Norco, Corona and Jurupa Valley.

KOKI-TV in Tulsa reports an out of order sign was placed on the bathroom and remained on the door throughout the weekend. Katherine Caraway, 29, is believed to have died of natural causes in the Sand Springs store in Oklahoma.

Another California wildfire, sparked by a traffic accident on a remote stretch of highway 80 miles (129km) east of Los Angeles, has grown to almost two square miles (more than 500 hectares) in just a few hours.

On California's Central Coast, evacuation orders remain in place for sparsely populated rural areas of San Luis Obispo County east of the town of Santa Margarita due to a almost 2-square-mile (5 sq. kilometer) fire.

A new wildfire that broke out Tuesday has prompted evacuations for dozens more homes in San Bernardino County. Two people were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries, officials said.

More than 900 personnel are battling the fire, which started June 7.

Nara Visa Fire Chief Gary Girard told The Eastern New Mexico News that John Cammack was severely burned after falling from a fire engine when the winds shifted and the flames changed direction.

Earlier in the evening, the department said almost 400 firefighters by ground and air were working to contain the fire.

State Sen. Evan Vickers (R-Cedar City) said the Brian Head fire has caused anxiety locally because of the lost cabins and lost memories, as well as the safety of firefighters like his son-in-law.
