Britain's opposition Labour Party to force vote in parliament on pay cap

Exterior cladding on 120 high-rise buildings across 37 local authority areas in England has failed fire safety checks, Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Wednesday.

In light of the tests conducted to date, she urged people to take preemptive action before results are returned and work with their local fire services to ensure buildings are safe for residents.

The prime minister also claimed that cuts to public services begun under the leadership of former Labour PM Tony Blair and involved "governments of all colours, councils of all political persuasions".

Jeremy Corbyn said the Grenfell fire had "exposed the disastrous effect of austerity" as he clashed with Theresa May during the first PMQs since the General Election.

"When you cut local authority budgets by 40 percent, we all pay a price in public safety".

Basil Andrews, London Village Network founder Rachael Box, labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, Islington Cllr Michelline Safi Ngongo and Dee Lynch at the launch of the London Village Network app at the Business Design Centre.

Labour's amendment calls for an end to cuts to the police and fire services, commends their response to recent terror attacks and the Grenfell Tower disaster, backs the recruitment of more officers and firefighters, and calls on the Government to lift the public sector pay cap.

Unable to hold Corbyn responsible for the tragedy, May instead chose to criticise decisions taken by Tony Blair and the last Labour government.

Mrs May should have just enough numbers to vote the amendment down, after striking a deal to stay in office with a small Northern Irish party.

But it is likely to survive thanks to a support deal with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

May, whose governing Conservative Party relinquished its parliamentary majority in the June 8 election, has signalled that she will listen more closely to Britons who are tired of cuts that some blame for a fire in west London that killed at least 79 people.

Opposition parties and devolved administrations in Scotland and Wales have called on the Government to match the funding boost for Northern Ireland across the United Kingdom, with shadow chancellor John McDonnell calling for an end to austerity "throughout the UK", not just in the province.

The vote is expected at around 1800 GMT.

May had called for a snap election in April in hopes of getting an increased majority that could have strengthened her position before going into two years of intense negotiations with the European Union about Britain's departure from the bloc.
