Celtics trade No. 1 overall draft pick to 76ers

Boston Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge Could Trade For Paul George

Boston Celtics General Manager Danny Ainge Could Trade For Paul George

The 2017 NBA Draft is this Thursday and we've already seen plenty of fireworks.

Colangelo refused to identify who the Sixers will select with the No. 1 overall pick, but the presumptive top pick is Washington guard Markelle Fultz.

With Isaiah Thomas and Al Horford, Ainge is looking to make a deal like the seven-for-one trade in 2007 that brought Kevin Garnett - and an NBA-record 17th championship - to Boston.

Let's not forget, the Celtics are recreating a winning culture in Boston.

LeBron James has owned the Eastern Conference this entire decade with eighth consecutive trips to the finals, but he is now entering his 15th season in the league. ESPN reported, via a source, that Tatum impressed the Celtics with his shot-making and footwork.

The player Philadelphia wants is clear: The 76ers wouldn't say it Monday, but they're going to take Fultz barring something cataclysmic happening before Thursday.

The Celtics could also be setting the stage for a potential run at Chicago Bulls forward Jimmy Butler or Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward.

One reason why they look like they could succeed is that they have another high draft pick.

The Sixers will choose first overall for the fourth time in team history.

Kansas Jayhawks guard Josh Jackson. We had heard a number of versions of the trade over the weekend, but on Monday we learned the official details regarding the protections on the future pick that will go to the Celtics.

While Fultz and Simmons are point guards, the Sixers believe they can co-exist - specifically playing Fultz off the ball at shooting guard, allowing Simmons to take advantage of court vision and passing skills and allowing Fultz to showcase his scoring while not running the offense. So, this year's draft is not as big for them as other teams like the Sixers and Lakers.

Many around the National Basketball Association believe the Celtics could be gearing up for a big trade that could land them a superstar before they even go into free agency with cap space.

The upcoming draft order is still up for discussion. The Eagles used a second-round pick to select cornerback Sidney Jones in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia went 28-54 this past season, after winning 19, 18 and 10 games respectively in the previous three seasons. The 76ers were in position to make the deal because of the assets they acquired under former general manager Sam Hinkie.

Buckle up, Celtics fans. If it's young players, that might be fine, but they have a core group right now that has a finite window with which they can contend, and a possible 2019 first rounder doesn't fit into said window. The Celtics are also better equipped to pursue an All-Star to compete for the title this year.

What is Danny Ainge thinking?
