"Inspired by Margaret Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale", the volunteers came to Washington D.C. from NY to show their opposition to the bill, which could dramatically restrict funding for health care centers that provide access to abortions and other forms of birth control. Planned Parenthood would also be gutted, and tons of women would be priced out of maternity coverage.

"It would be the worst bill for women in generations and decimate women's healthcare", Planned Parenthood communications director Fern Whyland told The Hill, adding: "It's a healthcare bill with no healthcare". Elena said they had plans to hold similar protests.

Similar protests have been staged in other major cities around the United States where activists have also worn the uniform. Earlier this year, women dressed in costume protested abortion bills in Texas and Ohio.

In The Handmaid's Tale, a theocratic regime calling itself Republic of Gilead takes over parts of the USA and has imposed severe limits to freedom and women's rights in a bid to control society and increase fertility rates.

And that they most certainly do, defying Christmas tradition after Christmas tradition to enjoy the holidays on their own terms. Hopefully this movie holds up well because I need to add new Xmas movies to watch every year.

"The Republic of Gilead is built on a foundation of the 17th-century Puritan roots that have always lain beneath the modern-day America we thought we knew", Atwood wrote in an article for The New York Times describing the novel's relevance in the age of President Donald Trump. The cuts alone to Medicaid would leave millions of women (and men) without their primary health care.

The Handmaid's Tale is the dystopian story of what happens when women who can bear children are forced into sexual servitude to provide children for the rich upper class.

It's unlikely that Tuesday's protest will be the last of its kind.
