While announcing yesterday's unprecedented fine, European Commissioner Margarethe Vestager, said the company abused its dominance and actively pushed competitors out in an "illegal" breach of EU antitrust rules. The EU has found Google has been pushing its own products up in search rankings in order to gain what to says is an unfair market advantage. "And most importantly, it has denied European consumers the benefits of competition, genuine choice of services and innovation".

A consumer using the firm's online search engine now sees results from Google Shopping promoted above the most relevant search results.

Google's been slapped with a massive fine for giving its shopping site too much favouritism in search results.

The European Commission further declared that the world's most popular internet search engine has 90 days to stop favouring its own shopping service or face a further penalty per day of up to 5 percent of Alphabet's average daily global turnover.

Trump welcomes World Series champion Cubs to White House
During the event in the Roosevelt Room, Trump asked , "Where's Dan?" "I think you have a lot of them", the president offered. Trump welcomed the manager and several players from the World Series champion Chicago Cubs to the White House on Wednesday.

As it "respectfully" disagrees with the EU's conclusions, Google will be considering an appeal and will continue to make its case. It is then, in effect, stating that if Google improves its services within is general offering (e.g., adding shopping services, or potentially a host of other features), then these improvements are harming competitors unfairly.

The fine signalled a tough stance by the agency in the first of three investigations into the company's dominance in searches and smartphones.

Download the Nigeria Today app from Play store. "That's why Google shows shopping ads, connecting our users with thousands of advertisers, large and small, in ways that are useful for both", a Google spokesperson said. And advertisers want to promote those same products.

"But this decision will allow us to focus on innovation and to provide consumers with wider choice and lower prices and that's what's really exciting", Mr Stables said.

The fine is the highest ever imposed in Europe for anti-competitive behaviour, exceeding a 1.06 billion euros penalty on Silicon Valley chip maker Intel in 2009. "This is a very well established type of infringement of the European Union competition rules".

This is a clear violation of EU's competition laws, which indicates that companies can not undermine competitors using their services or products as leverage. We will review the commission's decision in detail as we consider an appeal'.
