Federer won 6-3, 7-5 last spring at the Rome Masters before Zverev pulled off a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3 upset in the Halle semifinals.

Federer, the 18-times Grand Slam champion, who captured the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami titles this year, has yet to drop a set at the tournament.

He will face rapidly rising talent Karen Khachanov, who won his all-Russian quarter-final against Andrey Rublev 7-6 (8) 4-6 6-3 to reach his first tour semi-final of the year.

Zverev has played six sets hi last two matches and has shown consistently this tournament he's capable of taking his game to another level when needed.

From the start Federer piled on the pressure to establish a 4-0 lead meanwhile local hero Zverev was unable to gain a foothold into the first set. "I think Roger is playing really, really well". It is always a joy to play against him, only today it wasn't. While Zverev is 15 years younger than the Swiss, Federer also mentioned that he is looking to extend his career as much as possible.

Roger Federer from Switzerland returns the ball to Karen Khachanov from Russian Federation during the ATP tournament tennis match in Halle, western Germany, on June 24, 2017.

The German defeated France's Richard Gasquet in the second semi-final, 4-6 6-4 6-3.

"I played unbelievably well".

Prior to Sunday's final, Zverev hailed "Roger (Federer) the best player of all time on grass" and it seemed like the youngster was overawed by the moment, standing face-to-face with his childhood idol. "It's warm, it's hot, I'm a little bit exhausted".

Federer and Zverev come in this final on the back of winning all three of the finals they have competed in this year so someone's record is going to be broken today. The match was the quickest final in the history of the Halle Open.
