Florida: Man Trying To Help Lost Child Mistaken For a Child Predator

And, according to WFLA and police, people shared the man's photo and workplace on social media and labeled him "a child predator".

It all started at the Southwest Sports Complex in Lakeland on Saturday when a 2-year-old girl wandered away from her parents during a softball game. At least one independent witness said they observed the man walking with the child, trying to help find her parents.

The girl could not point to where her parents were, so the man proceeded to walk around with her to look for them.

Police say a Good Samaritan who was helping a two-year-old girl find her parents was assaulted by the girl's dad because he mistakenly believed his daughter was abducted.

But the dad tells WFLA all he saw was a odd man walking towards the parking lot with his daughter. "What would you do?" the father said. "I wanted to kill him!" "He's a parent of two daughters so he could understand how they reacted".

Police are warning people to be careful about what they post online, since wrongfully accusing someone can lead to a libel suit and cause irreparable harm.

A Good Samaritan is recovering after he was attacked by the father of a toddler he was trying to help.

"This guy is a father, a local businessman, he has two children, was trying to help this child, and they turned it completely around, and that's not right", Sgt. Gary Gross with the Lakeland Police Department tells a Tampa TV station. "However, this incident truly involved a Good Samaritan trying to assist a lost child finding their parents".

According to The Washington Post, the man has since left the Florida town of Lakeland with his family, fearing for their safety and his own.

'When I got there, I just swung on him, ' Strickland said.

Before posting to social media, police suggest calling police to verify what happened and get correct information.

One Facebook user responded: "I was one of those who shared post thinking it was helpful, now I feel bad that it clearly was not!"

"Definitely teaches me to check sources before spreading", one person commented.

After an investigation, charges were not filed against the victim, who refused to press charges against the father.

"Now this man's face is all over the internet", said another commenter on the police department's Facebook page.

After the police statement made it apparent that the posts were false, the residents began to delete the misinformation from their Facebook feeds.

The little girl pointed to the playground and the man took her hand and began walking with her in that direction.
