In Georgia, a cacophony of arguments could tilt House race

At a cumulative $50 million spent, it's the most expensive congressional race in history. Yes, it's just one congressional seat and special elections aren't necessarily good bellwethers of election results more than a year down the road.

"The leftists have gone and typecast and they've picked this young man - charismatic, articulate - and they've taught him a few Republican buzzwords", the former governor said at a Handel event. "I think the shooting is going to win this election for us", said Carver, the GOP chair of an adjacent congressional district. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported that Ossoff's Republican opponent, Karen Handel, also condemned the ad.

Millennial Democrat Jon Ossoff enjoys a small lead over Republican Karen Handel in the contest to occupy the Georgia congressional seat vacated by Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price, according to a survey released on Saturday.

Those are some of the rationales that could ultimately settle what both campaigns agree will be a close race, despite Republicans holding the seat since 1979 with representatives from Newt Gingrich, the eventual House speaker, to Price.

Although Ossoff doesn't describe his campaign as a referendum on the Trump presidency, others see national implications for the 2018 midterm election.

A gaggle of national and foreign media looked on at both rallies, a testament to how a single congressional seat has become a dominant story in US politics.

The only alternative, at this point, is Handel - who told a constituent last week that she thinks adoption by same-sex couples should be outlawed. Both candidates crisscrossed the district ahead of Tuesday's vote to rally their core supporters.

79 missing or presumed dead in the Grenfell Tower fire
Britain has held a moment of silence for the 79 people who are believed to have died in the high-rise fire in West London . Her First Secretary of State, Damian Green, defended the prime minister, saying she was as "distraught as we all are".

Swalwell, who represents the San Francisco Bay area, tweeted a video of himself at a phone back at the IBEW Union Hall in Dublin, California, where he said almost 100 people had gathered to phone voters in Georgia.

That attack has ratcheted up tensions in the Georgia race.

Georgia's 6th district encompasses much of suburban Atlanta and until recently was considered a shoe-in for Republicans.

Tom Perez, chairman of the national Democrat Party, sent an email after Georgia's April election ended inconclusively, writing: "If we go all-in and elect Jon, we'll turn Georgia's 6th district blue for the first time in 38 years and send a big, loud message to Donald and the Republicans who are backing him that Democrats are fired up and ready to fight".

Later this year there will be a special Senate election in Alabama to replace Republican Attorney General Jeff Sessions and House election to replace Republican Jason Chaffetz.

Mr. Trump, initially referring to the Republican candidate as "Handle" which he later amended in a corrected tweet, called out Ossoff for living outside the district, pointing out correctly that he "can't even vote in the district he wants to represent".
