Koepka's trip around the world leads to major title at home

PGA U.S. Open- Final Round

PGA U.S. Open- Final Round

The long-hitting American travelled far and wide, from Kazakhstan to Kenya and mainland Europe, cramming into bed and breakfast rooms with fellow players, spending some nights sleeping in cars, and learning about life and how to win.

He won in Italy and Spain, and he was on the verge of a third victory, this one in Scotland, that would earn him graduation to the European Tour.

During a tournament on the Challenger Tour, he had come close to quitting, telling his manager he wanted to go home.

"There was a low point the night before I won my final Challenge Tour event to get to my full European Tour card when I called Blake Smith, my manager, and I told him I didn't want to play". I don't know what it is.

"To go over there, I think it helped me grow up a little bit and really figure out that, hey, play golf, get it done, and then you can really take this somewhere", said Koepka, who made his first U.S. Ryder Cup team a year ago. And that I'll win if I stay patient and just keep doing what I'm doing. It's pretty cool. I'd love to get a map and just look at all the places I've won.

He stayed. He won.

Brooks Koepka holds up the U.S. Open trophy after finishing 16-under at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis.

Unusual mentioned historical players including Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, whose names are on the U.S. Open Trophy.

It was just Koepka's second career win on the PGA Tour and his first major victory, but the win was not a complete surprise either.

Those who saw him couldn't ignore the sheer athleticism, raw power and quiet confidence.

"I'd never teed off this late before, so that was different", he said.

It was an awesome day of Golf yesterday at Erin Hills, Wisconsin. "Obviously I need to do that more often".

Tommy Fleetwood of England finished fourth at 277.

With his final score of 16-under, the 27-year-old Florida golfer has equalled the best result in US Open history since the victory of Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy in 2011 at the par-71 Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. There were 133 sub-par rounds, nine more than the previous record in that 1990 U.S. Open. The only drama at the end was whether he'd make birdie on the par-5 18th to break Rory McIlroy's scoring record in relation to par.

All-in-all, the 117th U.S. Open at Erin Hills proved to be memorable, historic and exciting.

The muscular American, who started the day one back of overnight leader Brian Harman, was on the charge out of the gate collecting birdies on the opening two holes at a windswept Erin Hills.

On the 13th hole, Koepka sank a par putt to give him the outright lead after Harmen bogeyed on the 12th.

Despite such a chill personality, there was some irritation about not winning as much as he felt he should.

3 Brooks has a brother called Chase who is also a pro golfer, whereas Brooks is in the world's top 10 Chase is a little behind ranked 875 in the world.

Shane Lowry is looking forward to a return to the type of US Open courses which produce "carnage" after the experiment with two new venues in the last three years.

Koepka recorded three quick victories on the satellite circuit to make the step up to the European Tour before the Floridian eventually progressed to the USA -based PGA Tour.

Asked about avoiding sectional qualifying next year, Schauffele said, "That's another thing I didn't know". "It's one of those things". "To be honest, I'm not a big golf nerd".

"I felt on Saturday I played great".

"I mean there's probably not that much that's that interesting, to be honest".

Ireland's star is now preparing for a busy month and a half on Tour and he admits the confidence is high as he aims to end nearly two years without picking up a trophy.

"It's insane to think that this is only his second win", Justin Thomas said. Great player, great kid.
