Appearing in the White House's first on-camera press briefing in more than a week, Press Secretary Sean Spicer has said that the Trump administration has "tremendous respect" for the First Amendment.

A former strategist on the Republican National Committee, Spicer is reportedly considering taking on a more strategic role in the Trump administration that would keep him off camera, according to the Associated Press.

Fox News reported this week Spicer is about to be promoted to a position that would oversee both the press and communications teams at the White House, a move that would leave a vacancy behind the mic.

Spicer smiled during a question about the validity of the reports, saying, "I'm right here", as if to say clearly no immediate change had been made.

The author of the Atlantic article, Rosie Gray, tweeted Tuesday that "we're already several steps further into the "Sean got fatter" controversy than I thought we would be".

"There are days where we decide that the president's voice should be the one who speaks for the administration", Spicer told journalists.

When asked Tuesday if Trump believed Russian Federation interfered with the 2016 presidential election, as the USA intelligence community determined in January, Spicer said he wasn't sure. "When we have an announcement of a personnel nature we'll let you know".

His public role has already diminished in recent weeks. "But there is no massive White House shake-up coming, it's not going to happen", he insisted.

At one briefing, when she was questioned why Spicer was missing, she mentioned his role was probably getting upgraded.

Trump was apparently none too pleased earlier this year when Spicer was portrayed on "Saturday Night Live" by Melissa McCarthy, a sketch so successful it was stretched across the show's entire season.

The reason Spicer has stopped doing press briefings is that he's "gotten fatter", Steve Bannon texted a reporter.

President Trump warned on Twitter last month that "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
