President Donald Trump will visit France on Bastille Day on July 14 at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron to celebrate the arrival of American troops in France during World War I, the White House said Wednesday.

"President Trump looks forward to reaffirming America's strong ties of friendship with France, to celebrating this important day with the French people", the White House said in a statement.

Trump and Macron did meet face-to-face at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels on May 25, where Macron, 39, treated Trump, 71, to a bone-crunching handshake, with Macron later boasting in an interview that the macho display was meant to send the message that he will hold his ground against the United States president.

Macron's office on Tuesday said it had invited Trump on two occasions to attend the celebrations next month during which the U.S. military will take part to mark 100 years since it joined World War 1. "One must show that you won't make small concessions, even symbolic ones, but also not over-publicize things, either".

President Donald Trump met with newly-elected French president Emmanuel Macron in Brussels, ahead of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, on Thursday, May 25, 2017.

Trump spoke with Macron on Tuesday and congratulated him on 'France's successful parliamentary elections'.

Khan, a Muslim who was criticised by Trump over his handling of this month s London Bridge terror attack, said "many British people disagree with many of Donald Trump s policies" and the visit should be scrapped.

A date for the visit has not been set, but May's office say there is "no change" to the plans.
