Trump to announce new Cuba policy on Friday

President Donald Trump will today announce plans to roll back former President Obama's 2015 rapprochement with Cuba.

Trump will curtail cash flow to the Cuba's communist government in a reversal of some Obama Administration policies to be unveiled Friday in Miami.

Trump will reportedly prohibit Americans and U.S. companies from doing business with a Cuban conglomerate that owns large sections of the island nation's economy, Bloomberg reported.

Saying that the aim was to fix what Trump has called a "bad deal" struck by Obama, U.S. officials said the new administration would leave the door open to improved relations if Cuba undertakes democratic reforms such as allowing free elections and releasing political prisoners.

President Trump's aides say that Mr. Hussein Obama's easing of United States restrictions has done nothing to advance political freedoms in Cuba, while benefiting the Cuban government financially.

The Trump administration says the goal of the directive is to end business practices that enrich Havana's government but fail to benefit the Cuban people. The goal is to halt the flow of US cash to the country's military and security services in a bid to increase pressure on Cuba's government.

However, diplomatic relations reestablished by Obama, including reopened embassies in Washington and Havana, will remain and travel and money sent by Cuban Americans will not be affected. The policy will not directly talk about flights and cruises.

But travelers could see stepped up enforcement when they return to the U.S. They are required to maintain full schedules and keep detailed logs while in Cuba - something that is rarely checked.

Among the new restrictions likely to impact Americans, Trump will prohibit individual educational trips to Cuba. His aides contend that Obama's easing of US restrictions amounted to "appeasement" and has done nothing to advance political freedoms in Cuba, while benefiting the Cuban government financially.

Trump described his move as an effort to ramp up pressure to create a "free Cuba" after more than half a century of communism.

"You'll be very happy", Trump said in September.

The officials argued that the new policy will fulfill a campaign promise and reverse Obama-era policies that the Trump administration argues have appeased and "enriched" the Cuban military regime.

The change in the USA posture toward Cuba under Trump marks the latest policy about-face by the president. We should allow Americans to be Americans and enjoy the freedom to travel where, when and the way they want without bureaucratic red tape.

"Cuba is an important political topic at the regional level, but it carries little economic weight compared to other issues of interest to Trump", added Torrico, who also coordinates the master's program in public policy at Flacso.

"President Trump will treat the Castro regime as a malevolent dictatorship that it is", Diaz-Balart said.

Trump will travel on Friday to Miami, where he is set to announce a prohibition on "financial transactions" with military-backed tourism conglomerate GAESA, according to a source close to the deliberations.
