Plane makes emergency landing after passenger 'passes gas'

WBTV quoted a spokesperson with Raleigh-Durham International Airport, who said that the decision was taken after passengers on the flight became ill with nausea and headaches.

The American Airlines officials though admitted that there indeed was an odour issue, they refuted the original claim of a passenger passing gas as the reason for it.

The plane is now out of commission until the mechanical issue is resolved.

Authorities investigated the incident and determined that one of the passengers had "passed gas".

The flight, not identified by RDU officials, landed at the airport around 4 p.m. when the incident was reported. An updated statement from the airport referred to the incident a "medical call" after the planed deplaned "normally".

The semi's driver was cited for careless driving. "Another foot to the left and he would be dead", Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. The truck overturned when the driver lost control negotiating a curve and hit a guardrail, the station reported.

The airport's mixed messages prompted several media outlets to report that the plane had been forced to land in Raleigh - though it was the intended destination - and to be evacuated.

Had the commotion been caused a passenger breaking wind, however, it would not have been the first time.

"The resulting smell was so noxious that fellow passengers became ill and were rushed off the flight", an RDU employee reportedly told CBS South Carolina.
