China bears responsibility for Liu Xiaobo's death: Nobel committee

Tiananmen leader says world failed to save mentor Liu

Friends of China's most prominent dissident Liu Xiaobo have accused the Chinese Government of violating human rights after the activist died of multiple organ failures brought on by liver cancer.

Upon hearing the news of his passing, the Norwegian Nobel committee that awards the prize has said the Chinese government bears "heavy responsibility" for Mr Liu's "premature" death. Liu Xiaobo reportedly used his last few breaths to tell her to "live on well".

One of the most important critic of China's Communist Party has died after years of imprisonment.

Tsai Ing-wen, the president of self-ruled Taiwan which China regards as a wayward province, said on her Facebook page the island hoped China could now show self-confidence and promote political reform. "Ever since leaving the safety and comfort of America to lead the protests at Tiananmen Square in 1989, Liu sealed his fate as a persistent focus of persecution from the authoritarian PRC (People's Republic of China)", Cruz said. "This has determined his tragic life".

In its editorial on Friday, Global Times said Liu's supporters in the West had been less concerned about his health since his diagnosis than in making a political statement. The military crackdown killed hundreds, possibly thousands, of people and heralded a more repressive era.

In response to calls to allow Liu to leave China, the foreign ministry repeatedly said other countries should not interfere in China's internal affairs, using the same line on Thursday before his death was announced.

Just a day before Liu's death, the USA had called on China to release him from custody so he could see his family and pursue the medical care.

World leaders have praised Liu and called on China to release his widow, Liu Xia, from house arrest. "My thoughts go now to his wife, Liu Xia, and his family and friends".

"We call upon Chinese authorities to lift all restrictions they have put upon her". Xiaobo was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for "incitement to subvert state power".

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein urged China to guarantee his widow, Liu Xia, freedom of movement, and allow her to travel overseas should she want to.

Charter 08, a manifesto he helped draft calling for political change in China in 2008, was initially signed by over 350 Chinese intellectuals and human rights activists. "He didn't know about her condition and what had happened at home until not that long ago - that's why he agreed to go overseas with her". "A poet, scholar, and courageous advocate, Liu Xiaobo dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy and liberty".

"If she wants to leave China, there is no justification for denying her the opportunity to do so".

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply anxious about Liu Xia's situation in the aftermath of her husband's tragic death", Olav Njoelstad, the secretary of the committee, said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

"Your love is the sunlight that leaps over high walls and penetrates the iron bars of my prison window, stroking every inch of my skin, warming every cell of my body, allowing me to always keep peace, openness, and brightness in my heart, and filling every minute of my time in prison with meaning", he said.

But "if Dr. Liu is not released, if he dies in China still under their oppression, I intend to continue to fight until the day when the street is named in front of the embassy, and the Chinese communists can bow their heads in shame at their injustice".
