Chinese censors are blocking images of Winnie the Pooh

Posts comparing Chinese president Xi Jinping to the cartoon bear - a longstanding joke in China - were also taken down.

Winnie the Pooh has been blacked out from Chinese social media in the lead-up to the country's 19th Communist Party Congress this fall, the Financial Times reported Sunday.

Posts bearing the image and the Chinese characters for Winnie the Pooh were still permitted on the Twitter-like Weibo platform Monday.

The following year a photographed handshake between President Xi and Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe faced similar treatment. Meanwhile, animated gifs fearing Pooh vanished from messaging app WeChat. Though it will not likely change Xi's status as the top leader of the party, changes in the other positions could act as a bellwether indicating Xi's status as top leader for years to come.

Only on the fourth attempt, Federer made the break and opened the way to a historic victory at his favorite major. Roger has now won Australian Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Masters, Halle and Wimbledon .

The memes first surfaced in 2013 during Mr Xi's visit with then-US president Barack Obama, when an image of Winnie the Pooh walking with friend Tigger was set alongside a picture of the two heads of state together. In 2015 a picture of AA Milne's creation in a roofless vehicle was widely circulated and compared to one of Mr Xi riding in a auto while inspecting troops during a parade in Beijing.

"It's very murky what's allowed and what isn't, because officials never put out statements describing precisely what will be censored", Qiao said, noting that many Winnie the Pooh photos were still proliferating on the Chinese internet.

Chinese social media users have been testing the boundaries imposed on the lovable creation of AA Milne. A search on Weibo performed by Shanghaiist turned up multiple references made to Winnie the Pooh in recent days, though none having to do with Xi. "What did this adorable honey-loving bear ever do to provoke anyone?"
