Defying Trump, Jerry Brown to showcase American climate change efforts

Climate Council calls for action

Climate Council calls for action

I am writing in response to the two-part Courier article reporting the reaction of local activists and politicians to the USA withdrawal from the December 2015 United Nations Paris Climate Agreement.

The alliance - launched in May, just hours after President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the worldwide greenhouse-gas action plan - this week flipped the switch on its first website, an online hub designed "to inform Americans on state actions to address climate change after the USA was the lone holdout in affirming the Paris Agreement at the G20 Summit", according to a statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office. This set of options, which will highlight the significant levers available to states, cities, and businesses to further reduce USA emissions, will serve as a playbook for enhanced ambition among US climate leaders who are committed to meeting America's commitments under the Paris Agreement.

A coalition of American states, cities and businesses that have pledged to stick with the Paris climate pact will team up with experts to quantify their climate commitments and share their plans with the United Nations, vowing to act despite the Trump administration's exit from the accord.

Under former President Barack Obama, the country committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 26 to 28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.

Climate action will continue to happen in the USA thanks to action by cities, states, businesses, and grassroots advocates, including the Sierra Club and our Beyond Coal and Ready For 100 Campaigns.

Pelicans meet with Rajon Rondo about potential 1-year deal, report says
Rondo played with Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins in Sacramento during the 2015-16 season, and the two formed a strong bond. Rondo is obviously at the tail end of his career, which is why it makes sense that this would be a one-year rental.

Outside experts with the World Resources Institute and the Rocky Mountain Institute, two US -based non-profits, have been retained to conduct the study on current and projected emissions of "America's Pledge" affiliates. "We're already halfway there".

A coalition of US states, cities, businesses and colleges is committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as prescribed under the so-called Paris climate agreement, even after President Trump deemed the pact "unfair" and called for America to withdraw.

Almost 300 mayors, representing 60 million Americans, have also committed to adopt, honor, and uphold the Paris Climate Agreement by becoming Climate Mayors.

In 2015, during the lead-up to the Paris conference on climate change, the USA submitted its "Nationally Determined Contribution", committing to reduce emissions 26 to 28 percent by 2025 (based on 2005 levels). Jerry Brown and Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee - also released new "guiding principles" for its members, including recognition of the environmental and economic threats of climate change and pursuit of climate action's inherent job-creation and environmental-rehabilitation benefits.

"Although the focus right now is on the states and cities in the United States following the announcement by the new administration, the fact is that this is part of a movement of sub-national governments around the world to contribute to the global climate agenda", Nuttall said.
