Patrick Rodgers carded an nearly flawless seven-under-par 64 to take a two-shot lead at the John Deere Classic after two rounds.

Howell opened on the back nine with back-to-back birdies, his first birdie putt from six feet and second from twice as far, added another at 14 and struck for back-to-back birdies again at the par-3 16th and par-5 17th, putting his approach two feet from the cup on the former and two-putting from 75 feet on the latter.

The American duo made bright starts at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois on Thursday to be top of a congested leaderboard.

The 25-year-old is yet to secure his first PGA Tour victory, yet a seven-under-par 64 in IL saw him take a two-stroke buffer over fellow American Bryson DeChambeau.

Seeking his first PGA Tour victory, Rodgers holed eight birdies and only dropped one shot at the last to be 13 under at the halfway stage of the tournament.

Zach Johnson, the 2012 victor, had a 67 to join fellow American Charles Howell, the co-leader after the first round, at 10 under.

A two-putt gain at the par-five second was followed by a pitch-in from off the next green, before Rodgers picked up another birdie at the fifth and drained a 50-footer at the next.

Rodgers, who has played this event more than any other on the PGA Tour, has missed the cut in 13 starts this season, but has reached the weekend in his last three starts.

South Africa's Rory Sabbatini shared third on 65 with Americans Chad Campbell, Patrick Rodgers and Zach Johnson, the 2015 British Open champion. Tway had nine birdies in a 10-hole stretch en route to the best round of the day.
