Aussie financials shot up 0.6 percent though their US counterparts, which tend to benefit from higher rates, were last among sectors, closing up 0.1 percent.

The gold index rose 0.3 percent, after an overnight rise in gold prices on Yellen's testimony.

Modest gains by technology companies and banks are leading USA stock indexes slightly higher in midday trading on Wall Street.

But Yellen cautioned that boosting USA economic growth to the Trump administration's target of three percent would be "quite challenging", in part because of difficulty accelerating productivity growth.
