HTC says it's addressing its Touchpal keyboard ad problem

HTC grovels after serving up keyboard ads to some users

According to a couple of reddit posts, users are already seeing ads on their HTC 10 phones when they start using the keyboard.

The company has called on affected users to uninstall the keyboard - perhaps evidence that the update was pushed without HTC's approval.

We're not sure if HTC will be removing ads as a result of this backlash, so for now users will have to either live with it or find an alternative app. Soon HTC users took to Twitter to express their disappointment, which ultimately invited flak for the Taiwanese company. However, HTC has since responded to the public and says this was done out of error and shouldn't have happened. And since they are the customer's first recourse, users will naturally blame them or come to them for solutions or both. As you can see in the image below, the ad appears above the numbers and shortcut buttons, obstructing a good chunk of what you're trying to see on-screen.

American Airlines insists farty passenger wasn't cause of emergency
An updated statement from the airport referred to the incident a "medical call" after the planed deplaned "normally". The flight, not identified by RDU officials, landed at the airport around 4 p.m. when the incident was reported.

Advertising on a default keyboard is unacceptable, and more so coming from a brand as big and internationally known as HTC. Banner ads should never have been built into a keyboard that's installed by default in the first place. That is the differentiating factor that infuriated many HTC device owners and sideline commenters. The only feasible error we can think of is possible a misunderstanding between HTC's engineers and executives, the latter of which might have determined that it made financial sense to include ads on the free version of TouchPal. Perhaps it was an error on HTC's part or maybe the company simply failed to anticipate the heated backlash.

Fortunately, it is too easy to install other keyboards on Android, including Google's own Gboard.
