The No. 34 hasn't been worn by a member of the Boston Celtics since Paul Pierce was traded from the team in the summer of 2013.

According to ESPN on Monday afternoon, the Celtics have signed Paul to a one-day contract to allow Pierce to officially retire from the National Basketball Association with his former team. He announced that 2016-17 would be his last season before the season began.

Pierce spent 15 of his 19 seasons with the Celtics - including all 10 of his All-Star appearances.

"It's an honour to have this opportunity to once again call myself a Boston Celtic", Pierce said. As he's now retiring following his signing, Pierce pointed out that, "I'm a Celtic for life". "He is among the very best Celtics - a champion on and off the court", said Celtics governor and managing partner Wyc Grousbeck. He averaged 21.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 1,102 career games with Boston.

The Celtics paid luxury taxes in its recent heyday of having star players Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. He was named Finals MVP for his performance in the 2008 Celtics championship win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

Pierce had just one basket in the Clippers' 107-102 loss, but it was just as memorable as numerous buzzer-beating shots that earned him folk hero status during his time in Boston.

During the 2007-08 season, Pierce was joined by future Hall of Famers, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, to help bring the Celtics their first National Basketball Association title in 22 years.
