Indian scientists discover Saraswati — one of the most massive large-scale structures in the universe

The astronomers work at the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and the Astrophysics and Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research in Pune, the National Institute of Technology in Jamshedpur and Newman College in Thodupuzha.

A group of Indian astronomers have discovered a massive supercluster of galaxies, and have named it Saraswati.

According to IUCAA, this is one of the largest-known structures in the nearby Universe, and is at a distance of 4,000 million light-years from us, and stretching over 600 million light-years. The mass of the galaxy extends over 600 million light years. "It is true that the balance between dark matter and dark energy can produce large structures, but a supercluster of this size does present an enigma", said Raychaudhury. The cluster spans over 650 million light years in its expanse and has over 10,000 galaxies in 42 clusters.

This novel discovery is being published in the latest issue of The Astrophysical Journal, the premier research journal of the American Astronomical Society.

A Supercluster is a chain of galaxies and galaxy clusters, bound by gravity, often several hundred times bigger than clusters of galaxies.

The newly discovered galaxy is the largest known structure in the neighborhood of the universe. As per the model, smaller structures like galaxies are formed first, which congregate to form large structures. The cluster of galaxies, found in the direction of the Pisces constellation, is one of the most massive large-scale structures in the universe. "Saraswati supercluster is the farthest one".

The supercluster "Saraswati" has been named after a Hindu godesss and a major river, around which the people of the ancient Indian civilization lived in the past. The discovery has made astronomers think about the early stages of evolution of the universe and provides vital clues about dark matter.

Joydeep Bagchi from IUCAA, lead author of the paper, and co-author Sankhyayan said they were "astonished to spot this giant wall-like supercluster of galaxies", visible in a large spectroscopic survey of distant galaxies, known as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Given the belief that the universe is 13.8 billion years old, the discovery implies that such a huge structure existed even when the universe was just about ten billion years old.

This project was supported by the University Grants Commission, through its funding of IUCAA, and the Indo-French Centre for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA) programme.
