Former President Jimmy Carter taken to the hospital for dehydration

Former United States president Jimmy Carter has been released from a Winnipeg hospital a day after he became dehydrated while volunteering with a Habitat for Humanity home-building event in the city.

The former US president kicked off the final day of the build with a devotional at 8 a.m. following an overnight stay in the hospital due to dehydration from working in the heat. He then attended a prayer service at the work site. Neither group said whether Carter would be hospitalized overnight.

While the vibrant former president continued his busy schedule of appearances on behalf of the Carter Center and Habitat for Humanity, he did admit that he would be scaling back those appearances and slowing down a bit.

The American, who has seven grand slam singles titles in total, is the subject of a wrongful-death lawsuit over the accident. If Williams wins Saturday, she would be the oldest women's Grand Slam champion in the Open era (since 1968).

The former president and his wife were in Edmonton, where Habitat is building 75 homes, from Monday to Wednesday before coming to Winnipeg.

The Carters have been working with the organization for more than three decades, and had a hand in the building, renovation and fix of "more than 4,000 homes", according to its website. He was treated by paramedics who took him away in an ambulance, without using lights or siren, the newspaper said.

The ceremony is where the Carters plan to thank the volunteers and sponsors for their work and help and announce where the Carter Work Project will be held next year.
