Liberty Broadband, one of Charter's largest investors, chairman John Malone was said to have talked with Son about a deal that would "bolster Charter's efforts to add wireless service to its cable TV and internet businesses" according to people familiar with the situation.

Sprint Chairman Masayoshi Son approached Warren Buffett to discuss a deal with the telecoms company, according to The Wall Street Journal's Ryan Knutson and Shalini Ramachandran. Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure is also involved in the negotiations, the sources said.

Though the details of the meeting have not been disclosed, the Journal reported that there is a possibility that Berkshire could invest as much as $10 billion in a potential transaction concerning the company.

Cilic and Querrey, both 6-foot-6, used their powerful serves to dominate most of the match. Cilic struck 25 aces against the American and in truth, could have won in three sets.

Shares of Sprint were up 5 percent at $8.62 in afternoon trading on Friday.

A significant cash infusion in Sprint would give the debt-laden company flexibility and resources to continue its turnaround and invest in its network, the sources said, which could help it better compete in the fierce US wireless industry. Sprint, Berkshire Hathaway and Liberty Interactive have yet to comment on the matter.

Son, who owns 80% of Sprint, has been active in merger talks for the money-losing company in recent months, including a public courtship of mobile rival T-Mobile U.S. Inc.
