Kansas State OL Scott Frantz announces that he is gay

The big reveal for Frantz came during an offseason team-building activity past year that asked each player to share a secret about themselves.

Frantz said he announced he was gay to "reach out to all the other kids who are just like me".

This story is developing and will be updated.

Frantz told ESPN that he knew he was gay in grade school but didn't tell his family until after he told his teammates.

After redshirting his first year, Frantz became the first tackle to start every game as a freshman for Kansas State in three decades, according to Outsports.

Arizona freshman defensive end My-King Johnson came out at the age of 12 and was the first openly gay player to receive a Power Five scholarship. "And they did", Kansas State coach Bill Snyder said.

It's heartwarming to see Frantz embraced by his K-State teammates, and that support should continue from the stands at the Wildcats' opener against Central Arkansas on September 2. "I've grown so much closer to my teammates since then, so it's been an fantastic experience", Frantz told ESPN's Holly Rowe.

Frantz disclosed his sexual orientation to his teammates during a team-building exercise, and told the network on Wednesday that he was relieved to find acceptance within the locker room.

Frantz said he told his teammates during a players-only meeting last season. Frantz spoke about coming out to coaching staff and his teammates, saying: "E$3 ver since then it's been great. So it's been an incredible experience".

"I was quite comfortable that they would be very receptive and that they would treat him as they always said as, you know, his teammate and someone that they cared about. (My teammate) Alex Barnes came over to me, put his arms around me".

"I spent my whole childhood hating myself because of who I was", Frantz said. "I was angry. I was mad".
