Transfer report Lazio ‘in pole position’ to sign departing Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva

Lucas Leiva's long Liverpool career looks set to end after the club accepted an offer for his services from Lazio.

Despite being at Liverpool for ten years, rarely has a summer gone by where he has not been linked with a move away from the club.

The Rome giants are on the lookout for a replacement for star playmaker Lucas Biglia, who is expected to join AC Milan after a bid in the region of £15million was accepted.

Lazio are confident of thrashing out personal terms with the midfielder's representatives in the coming hours in order to get the deal over the line soon.

When asked if he thought Akhmetshin was connected to the Russian security services, Rohrabacher said: "I would certainly not rule that out".

The 30-year-old has been a mainstay in the Reds midfield over this period, but things have changed drastically this season.

Gremio, the player's former club, had expressed an interest in re-signing him as did Brighton, Celtic and Newcastle United, managed by his ex-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

In contrast to this, Times' journalist Paul Joyce reports that Lazio have already submitted a bid for Lucas and that the midfielder may not be part of the Liverpool squad to play Wigan Athletic this evening.

He won just one trophy during his time with the Reds - the 2011-12 League Cup - and was Liverpool's player of the year in 2010-11.
