Sen. John McCain Has Surgery to Remove Blood Clot Above Eye

The 80-year-old Senate veteran was advised by doctors to remain in Arizona next week, his office said.

Two Republican senators - Rand Paul of Kentucky and Susan Collins of ME - have already announced opposition to proceeding to the most version of the health care reconciliation bill.

Responding to the issue, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement late Saturday that the Senate will defer consideration of the health care bill.

It was unclear how McCain's absence might affect a crucial Senate vote on legislation to dismantle and replace Obamacare, with Republicans so divided that the absence of a single "yes" vote could doom the healthcare bill.

John McCain ordered to rest one week following surgery for a blood clot, the vote on the new version of the health care bill won't occur until he returns, two congressional aides told CNN on Saturday night. "On the advice of his doctors, Senator McCain will be recovering in Arizona next week".

If McCain does stay at home next week, that would put the GOP push on health care in peril, as right now, Republicans would not have any more than 50 votes for their plan to overhaul the Obama health law. He is in good spirits and recovering comfortably at home with his family. "Tissue pathology reports are pending within the next several days", the statement from the Mayo Clinic read. "Surgeons successfully removed the 5-cm blood clot during a minimally invasive craniotomy with an eyebrow incision", the Mayo Clinic said in a statement.
